Ignatian Spirituality Program

As a Jesuit parish, St. Peter’s has developed an Ignatian Spirituality Program whose mission is simple – to promote and foster Ignatian spirituality.  The Program itself consists of various prayer and retreat experiences [see schedule below] scheduled from September through May of each year.  The annual Program is developed and delivered by the parish’s Ignatian Spirituality Team [see below] led by Rev. Vince Alagia, SJ, with additional guidance and support from our pastor, Rev. Pat Earl, SJ.  Our events and parking are free.  We invite you to peruse the list of events and come as the Spirit and your desire moves you.

RETREAT EXPERIENCES AND SPECIAL EVENTS

Saturday Retreats

Retreats are typically held on Saturday mornings from 8:30AM to Noon in Biss Hall.   Each retreat is built around a theme and the reflections and contemplations are centered on those themes.  Included in these retreats are reflection questions following the contemplation, time for silence and private prayer and an Emmaus-type sharing with a fellow retreatant.  As our priests are available and time permits, retreats may conclude with the celebration of Mass.

Seasonal Guided Retreats

The goal of our seasonal guided retreats is to offer participants the opportunity to deepen their prayer life based on Scripture.  These are 2-4 week retreats, beginning on a Saturday morning and concluding on the Saturday morning at the retreat's closing.  There are only two [2] group meetings.  We meet on the first Saturday to learn what the upcoming retreat entails and receive our Scripture readings; we meet again on the final Saturday to bring closure to the retreat.

Retreatants commit to a half hour of daily prayer, including Scripture reading based on the material for the retreat and to a daily Examen of Consciousness.  Journaling may also be helpful to the retreatant as she/he prayerfully reflects on the Scripture during the week.

The retreatant and her/his guide arrange a mutually agreeable time and place to meet once or twice per week during the retreat period.  Retreat guides are Jesuits and lay members of the parish trained for this ministry.

ADDITIONAL IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY PROGRAM OFFERINGS AT ST. PETER’S

Coming out of experiences with Prayer Nights and Retreats, an individual may wish to explore further experiences in deepening prayer life or spiritual development.  To that end, we are pleased to offer the following opportunities:

SIX WEEK DIRECTED RETREAT

This may occur individually or within a group, depending on the number of interested individuals.  Typically there is a group meeting on opening and closing days.  The commitment for this experience is an hour of daily prayer, a meeting with a guide once a week at a mutually agreeable time and location.  The Retreatant is encouraged to engage in some journaling and practice of the Examen.

SPIRITUAL EXERCISES [For Busy People]

For those who do not have the opportunity to take time away from lives caught up with family and work, this is an opportunity to experience the full Ignatian Spiritual Exercises.  The schedule typically involves an hour of daily prayer, the daily Examen and journaling.  The Retreatant meets once a week with a guide at a mutually agreeable time and location and the experience typically takes from six [6] to nine [9] months.

SPIRITUAL COMPANIONSHIP

This ministry is offered to those already on a spiritual path who desire a deeper relationship with God.  The role of the spiritual companion is to listen to and encourage the individual in that desire for a deeper relationship with the Lord.  Individuals interested in this experience meet 1/1 with a companion at a mutually agreeable time, location and frequency.   Spiritual companions may be Jesuits or Lay members of the parish specifically trained for this ministry.
