Mass Petitions – Prayers of the Faithful
During Roman Catholic Mass, Catholics say the Prayer of the Faithful. This means that the assembly is invited to pray for the concerns of Church and the world. The pattern used during Mass reminds us that the local Church gathered in prayer is united with the universal Church.
The recommended order for intentions given in the Roman Missal is as follows.
1. For the needs of the Church
2. For the world
3. For those in need
4. For the local community

Pope John Paul II indicates that people sometimes say they don't know how to pray. "How to pray? This is a simple matter. I would say: Pray any way you like, so long as you do pray." You can pray the way your mother taught you; you can use a prayer book. Sometimes it takes courage to pray; but it is possible to pray, and necessary to pray. Whether from memory or a book or just in thought, it is all the same.
