SOME THOUGHTS ON ADULT EDUCATION IN THE PARISH
I plan to resume our adult education sessions on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:00pm in Biss Hall. Those who have come to our meetings assure me they have been of help. We have been dealing primarily with the Scriptures. Last spring we asked how does the Christian approach the Gospels? With what expectations should we read, study and reflect on them? This past fall we actually studied the Gospel of John and tried to understand how the author wanted to be understood. I think we came to appreciate the depth of meaning John associated with the words: “And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory…”[John 1, 14]
We always need to keep ourselves well grounded in the Scriptures. In order to do this, I also think we need to become more attuned to where and how we are spiritually. It is the same Spirit of God at work in the Scriptures that is also at work in ourselves. We will be better able to recognize that Spirit the more familiar we become with its presence in both spheres.
Therefore, I am proposing that we read and discuss a book written by a spiritual master, Henri Nouwen. The title is: Spiritual Formation: Following the Movements of the Spirit. It is a finely crafted text bringing together in simple form Nouwen’s spiritual insights into how the Spirit of God is actively present in our lives. It is written for groups such as ourselves – parish adults seeking to go a bit deeper into their lives as Catholic Christians. Nouwen was known for his ability to communicate the depths of Christian life in an attractive and accessible way.
I think our life as a parish will be enriched by coming together to discuss this book. I intend to have 10 copies of the book available on March 29. It is easily available through local bookstores and Amazon. Mention “St. Peter’s” at Park Road Bookstore to receive a 20% discount!
Henri Nouwen, Spiritual Formation: Following the Movement of the Spirit was published by HarperCollins in 2010. ($25.99)
