Baptism (infants and young children)

Baptisms at St. Peter for Infants and Young Children (up to 7 years old)

Welcome! We are so happy you are seeking the Sacrament of Baptism for your child. Please review St. Peter Catholic Church's Baptism Requirements and Godparent/Sponsor requirements that are below.
If you are an active registered parishioner at St. Peter Church for at least three months and would like to schedule a baptism, please complete and submit the baptism registration form:

Baptisms may be scheduled after the Baptism Registration Form is submitted. Parents who have not taken a baptism preparation class within the last three years are required to attend a baptism preparation class. You will receive the link to sign up for a baptism preparation class after Faith Formation receives and processes your Baptism Registration Form.  

Baptism Requirements:
1. At least one parent must be an active, registered parishioner at St Peter for at least three months prior to beginning the Baptism process
2. Being an active parishioner means that you participate in spiritual growth opportunities at St Peter parish, attend Mass regularly, and contribute financially to support our parish mission. (Can. 857.2)
3. Complete the information needed for baptism form.
4. Attend the Baptism Preparation Class if you have not taken a class in the last three years. (Can. 851.2)
5. Baptisms may be scheduled after the Baptism Information Form is submitted and you’ve signed up for the Baptism Preparation Class, if required for your family.
6. Donations to support the baptism process are accepted, but not required. They support parish faith formation programs.
7. As you discern your choice of your child’s godparents, please consider the required qualifications below.
Note: A completed Godparent/Sponsor Form from one of your Godparent's parish is required if the Godparents are not registered members of St Peter. (The completed form will need to be signed and sealed by the Pastor or his representative.)

Godparent Requirements:
A godparent's responsibility is not only to be present at the celebration of their godchild’s baptism, but also to assume, through word and example, a lifelong responsibility to help their godchild lead a Christian life in harmony with the baptism they have received. This lifelong responsibility includes leading their godchild to a life of prayer, to knowledge of their faith, to loving service to others, and to reception of Eucharist and Confirmation. (Can.872)
1. There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each. (Can 873) Thus, only one godparent is required. If there are two godparents, one must be male and the other female. More than two are not permitted.
2. A godparent must be at least 16 years old; must be fully initiated through Confirmation and Eucharist and must lead a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on; may not be the father or mother of the child to be baptized. (Con.874.1)
3. If married, the godparent must be married in the Catholic Church or have had their marriage blessed by the Catholic Church.
4. A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community is not to participate except together with a Catholic sponsor and then only as a witness of the baptism. (Can.874.2)

First Holy Communion

Preparation for First Communion takes place in the spring.
Children in the Diocese of Charlotte are able to celebrate their First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion during second grade, provided it is their second consecutive year of faith formation or they attend a MACS school.
All Children attend weekly Sunday classes in Benedict Hall. Go to Faith Formation for more information about weekly Sunday classes

First Reconciliation

Preparation for First Reconciliation takes place in the fall.
Children in the Diocese of Charlotte are able to celebrate their First Reconciliation during second grade, provided that it is their second consecutive year of faith formation, or they attend a MACS school. All Children attend weekly Sunday classes in Benedict Hall.
All students must enroll in the parish sacramental program, whether enrolled in MACS schools or a parish faith formation program.

Reconciliation

Reconciliation occurs each weekday at 11:15-11:45 am. Or by appointment, call 704.332.2901
Additional times are offered during for Advent and Lent.

Confirmation

Adults
The adult confirmation program is for practicing Catholics over 18 years of age who have been baptized and received First Communion but have not been confirmed in the Church. There is no fee for the program. The requirement for confirmation is participation in a series of weekly dialogues, which is a combination of in-person meetings and Zoom calls.

Matrimony

Congratulations on your engagement!

Preparation for marriage should begin about a year prior to the planned wedding. For a general overview of the marriage preparation process, visit Marriage - Diocese of Charlotte. Please email Deacon Jim Bozik for information on marriages at St. Peter. We also offer marriage preparation for parishioners who are planning to be married at another church.

If either the bride or the groom have been married previously, an annulment is needed if not in place. For Information on the annulment process, visit Tribunal at the Diocese of Charlotte.

Eucharistic Ministry to the Homebound

We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of qualified Eucharistic Ministers who visit home-bound parishioners on a short-term or long-term basis to bring the Eucharist and offer encouragement and friendship.

This small group of dedicated, caring parishioners provide the Holy Eucharist when requested, share the Sunday’s Gospel and a listening ear, chat or simply send a card of greeting. Visits are prearranged between the homebound parishioner and minister. Special bonds are formed, especially with the homebound.
